For all you newbies out there! ^^
Here is where feedback from different sources are collected (:
So. The basic makeup must-haves...
Some basics that every girl into makeup should have:
Eye Primer: This is a must if you have oily lids. Not only will this keep your eyeshadows and eyeliner stay on longer and prevent them from smudging or smearing, it'll also make your eyeshadow colors more vibrant. Too Faced Shadow Insurance and Urban Decay Potion Primer are some popular pics. I heard that UDPP is best for people with oily lids.
Eye Liner: Black or Ash if you've got dark hair, dark brown if you have lighter brown hair. Unless you're going for an intense look, then black eyeliner no matter what hair color! You should have a good eye pencil to line your eyes and a gel liner or liquid liner for the top of your lid. I like using MAC paint pot in BlackTrak, it's a gel liner. If you want to save money, look for liquid liner at the drugstore--Maybelline and Revlon are some good brands.
Concealer: This will be good to hide dark under eye circles or a noticeable blemish. I suggest going to a MAC counter or a Sephora store to find a shade that will match you best.
Foundation: Light coat of powder can really pull your look together and give you a flawless face. I suggest going to a MAC counter or a Sephora store to find a shade that will match you best.
Mascara: I like using Maybelline Colossal for volume, then I go over it with Covergirl LashBlast for length. Drugstore mascaras usually work just as well as high end ones, for a fraction of the price. Experiment with different mascaras to see which one will give you the effect you want. You can always return it if you don't like it, even if it's already opened and used!
Eyeshadows: If you're just starting out, the Coastal Scents 88 palette (coastalscents.com) or the 120 palettes (Ebay) would be a good buy. There's a bunch of colors so you can experiment, and it's fairly cheap (around $20). However, definitely consider picking up some neutral colors--you can wear them all the time for everyday looks.
Brushes: Brushes will make a world of difference in applying makeup. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars--E.L.F's studio brushes are excellent and they only cost $3 each! As you get more advanced, then maybe you'll want to buy more higher-end brushes. But me, I'm happy with my ELF brushes ahha.
And if you're getting this for a friend, I think it would be such a better idea if you figured out what works for her (Like, is she looking for more volumized lashes? or just length? Or is she looking for heavy coverage foundation or light? etc, etc) and you bought everything and make her a cute gift basket or something. That's so much better than just buying some general starter kit and it'll show the effort you put into it!
Before you buy anything though, make sure you look up reviews on the product! Makeupalley.com is a great place to read reviews.
