SUMMARY(may be a few spoliers just so you understand the plot)
Well, there`s basically this girl who knows martial arts and is wandering through Jiang Hu(Giang Ho) alone, because her father was killed and she doesn`t know where her mother is. Her name is ShangGuan Yan, otherwise nicknamed Nu Shen Long. The movie starts out with her slaying two people to show how high her skills are. Then, she encounters and fights a person named Sima Chang Feng, who possesses a special sword that has a special bond with hers.
Another character introduced into the plot is Sai Hua Tuo, an extremely talented doctor who knows how to predict things by looking at the stars, rather like ZhuGe Liang from the Three Kingdoms era. In my opinion, he`s alot more interesting than Sima Chang Feng, who later becomes ShangGuan Yan`s love interest. Throughout the whole series, Sai Hua Tuo doesn`t hide his feelings for ShangGuan Yan. He helps her escape danger countless times, but she cannot return his love. The way he just wanted her happy really touched me. For her, he was willing to sacrifice everything. The background of Sai Hua Tuo is rather sad, too, because he was born with lame legs. His father abandoned him. Since he was little, Sai Hua Tuo was raised by his Master.
Sima Chang Feng is a dumb hero. True, he has skills that match ShangGuan Yan`s kung fu, but he always listens to his godfather. His godfather is, in actuality, an evil man who is using Sima Chang Feng, who fails to see it. Even when he DID see his godfather`s evilness, he still listened to him, because he was the person who raised him since childhood.
The character of Stinky Tofu is in the plot, in my opinion, to add a bit of comical relief to the audience, because this series is quite sad in some areas. Stinky Tofu is protrayed by the funny Eric Suen. At first, his character rather likes ShangGuan Yan, but later he falls for the princess OuYang Ying Ying, who is played by Vicky Chen.(or maybe it was Vivian Chen, can`t remember)
The character Xiao Duo Ya(dunno if that`s spelled right) is basically a little kid who follows ShangGuan Yan around, wanting to kill her because of a little misunderstanding. I think he`s kind of cute, in a way.
Some other characters include Bai Tong and Bing Xin. Bai Tong is a man with with black hair and white eyebrows, hence the name. He is rather heroic and fair, but his greed to be the best fighter in Wu Lin(Vo Lam) was more important to him than love. Bing Xin loved him, but his desire caused them to be more and more isolated each day. He didn`t realize the significance of this until an encounter with death.
The brief background of the two swords possessed by ShangGuan Yan and Sima Chang Feng is this. The owner of the swords lost a great love, and so raised the sowrds so that they sort of grew to "love" each other. It is said that the two in possession of the swords will fall in love, no matter who they are. That is because when the swords meet, they form a special love bond.
If you like series with martial arts that take place in ancient China, then this is the series for you. The plot also blends with several romantic ties, among which is one of the most tragic I`ve ever seen. There wasn`t a single moment when I found the series boring, but the idiocy of Sima Chang Feng did irritate me. Also, I was annoyed that ShangGuan Yan chose to love the IDIOT instead of the one who deeply cared for her. The revenge, romace, martial arts, and suspense kept me watching. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this series a 10.
